‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Guide To Styling For A Big Event

You could be on the guest list every week or you could have one big event once a year, but it is always a good idea to have a quick event wardrobe checklist. That ”extraordinarily organized checklist” feeling can be the key to keeping your head cool in the chaos of a big event. Try to do a few fittings and take photographs of your outfits before the event. An outfit that looks gorgeous on you can sometimes not photograph well. You also want to have some fun ahead of time. A big event is not something you should end up dreading… Because you can not figure out what to wear. – Costume Design by Mary E. Vogt

Getting ready for a big event ahead of time will hopefully make you enjoy the event even more. This is not the time to be exploring a new style or chasing a new fashion trend. You might have already found a new style that fits your body type. When styling for a big event, you should be ready to put your style knowledge to the test and create a new outfit that will make you feel amazing.

Crazy Rich Costume Design. Great costume design can provide the basis for new styling options. Unfortunately, the costume design in ‘Crazy Rich Asians‘ does not do anything. The costume design in ‘Crazy Rich Asians‘ mostly reminds us of selected outfits by someone who has watched Gossip Girl one too many times. Nick’s (Henry Golding) white linnen suit singles him out as the main character, but does not give us any wow factor. The shades of white, the material and the fit of the suit are just bad choices. Rachel’s (Constance Wu) colorful glitter dress, double denim airport outfit and light blue chiffon dress seem like the fast fashion version of the Serena van der Woodsen & Blair Waldorf aesthetic. I prefer the Gossip Girl version. The costume designer could have been a two-for-one deal with the production company. Therefore, the Crazy Rich Asians costume design is the perfect example of how not to style for a big event.

Know the style codes. A new event is usually announced with a beautiful invite. Next to the provided event style codes you should be receiving, you might want to put in a bit more effort by getting to know your host. Are you attending a gallery opening, a cool brand promotion, a low-key wedding or a summer garden birthday party? The ‘dress code: casual chic‘ on each of these invites means something different. Get to know more about your host and it will be even easier to style your outfit for the occasion. If you get overwhelmed easily, try to follow your checklist ahead of time. Keep your checklist short, do not go overboard by chasing a new fashion trend and make sure to fill your clutch with all your favorite essentials.

Here are some of my favorite notebooks to keep track of my checklists:
