‘A Rainy Day In New York’ Shows Us That You Need More Than One Raincoat

In ‘A Rainy Day in New York‘ Ashleigh Enright (Elle Fanning) travels to Manhattan to interview for the college paper. Her boyfriend Gatsby (Timothée Chalamet) tags along, allowing them to spend a weekend in his hometown. The rapidly changing weather conditions allow us to explore the costume design and the autumn layering season at its best. Or was it that signature Woody Allen golden light glow that made you run to your closet in search for all those shades of cool? – Costume Design by Susan Antonelli

I watched A Rainy Day in New York on a sunny, but soon turned rainy Sunday in Amsterdam. I wasn’t wearing my raincoat and my umbrella barely made it to the cinema in one piece. It actually rains a lot here and that might sometimes be the reason that practicality in fashion usually wins over any beauty contest.

When it rains, it pours. Ashleigh brings us college tartan with a double dose of sweetness. Her outfits are inspired by college uniforms and we see her mixing pleated plaid skirts with soft knit tops that enhance her fair complexion. These fresh blush colors and earthy tones are the perfect color palette for the fall season. Gatsby complements her feminine outfits, without ever overshadowing her. His suit jackets and chino pants slightly switch in color throughout the movie. Most scenes it actually feels like he is wearing the same outfit. These costume choices portray him as a stable character, while he is met with one surprise after the other throughout this New York adventure.

A color match made in heaven. Fall and winter are THE layering seasons! These seasons will hopefully allow you to have endless styling options. There are multiple winning combinations that make autumn lovers swoon! I always swear by mixing a muted mustard color with items in an eggplant color because this warm color palette suits all skin tones and most hair colors. This color combination is also a good base for your other staple pieces and will easily transition any of your autumn wardrobe to winter. Try to expand your wardrobe with a richer color palette. For your next rain coat you can go for a deep maroon or a dark navy color in order to have more options for your basic neutrals.

How to navigate your way? Ashleigh wears one particular outfit for the longest amount of time. As she navigates her way through New York, we actually wish to see her switch up her looks. Her teal tartan set is fresh with soft matching details that pull the whole look together. It perfectly shows us how to layer with light and thin fabrics. This combination of the fishnet tights and the ballet flats elongates her legs, while giving that extra little attention to detail. It is the perfect way to say:“I know fashion, but there’s no need for me to brag about it.
