Why ‘The Holiday’ Wardrobe Will Allow You To Find Your Zen This Season

The holiday season can be a bit hectic. Some people are happy to show up to the party. Some people do not show up to the party. The elephant in the room always shows up to the party. And there you all are. In ‘The Holiday’, Amanda (Cameron Diaz) and Iris (Kate Winslet) make an exit from it all as they decide to swap homes. Are there any other ways to find your zen this holiday season besides going all Hollywood dramatic? – Costume Design by Marlene Stewart

It has been 16 years since the release of The Holiday directed by the legendary Nancy Meyers and it is still one of the best Christmas movies to ever see the light of day. Where to actually start? The amazing set design, the funny dialogue or the feel-good soundtrack? The costume design is mostly influenced by the weather in the different locations these characters find themselves in, but there’s one thing they all seem to have in common. That ”cool lounging around the house” wardrobe.

Meditate on it. A relaxing outfit might make you feel good, but let’s be honest about the fact that the holiday season sometimes has a way of getting under your skin. Somewhere along the lines of two-page emails from people apologizing for their behaviour, extremely long texts from long lost family members who do not realize that relationships are a two-way street, to 14 missed calls on Boxing Day. I have seen it all. Nobody is perfect and therefore it is up to you to find your own zen amongst all the dirty laundry. I like using Insight Timer for guided meditations, but you can also just put on The Holiday soundtrack and dance around the living room like it is nobody’s business. That just sounds like a lot more fun to me.

Take your time. Christmas sweaters, fancy dresses, red lipstick, bow-tie suits, oversized blazers with rhinestones, matching Christmas PJ’s or anything with extra glitter goes. The appropriate holiday season outfit list is endless. You’re basically allowed to dress like a Christmas tree and why should you not? From December 15th to December 31st the outfits can be on fashion steroids and nobody is allowed to question it. Make sure to take some time for yourself between all the holiday craze. Relax and watch The Holiday one more time with your favorite woolly socks, cozy slippers and use that box of Kleenex tissues when you cry about those The Holiday 2 rumors not being true. I am as upset about it as you are.
