How To Steal Some Of That French Sophistication From ‘Les Choses De La Vie’

American movies give us: Boy meets girl. Boy and girl fall in love and overcome a difficult encounter. Boy and girl stay together, madly in love forever. The end. The French tend to have a different approach to their rom-coms. There is a certain elegance in the mess of it all. Boy meets girl. Boy marries girl. Husband and wife realize it is difficult to make a marriage last forever. Husband or wife has an affair which leads to a divorce, but not all hope is lost. Better luck in the second marriage. Les Choses De La Vie directed by Claude Sautet begins with the blossoming romance of Pierre (Michel Piccoli) and Hélène (Romy Schneider). Soon Pierre gets into a car accident and as he subconsciously lays on the ground in the field next to the road, he begins to have flashbacks of the choices he made leading up to that point. The beauty and style of his girlfriend Hélène reawaken the nostalgia for early ’70s fashion.

What is the color palette? The opening scene starts with the couple at home, we see Pierre and Hélène in casual outfits. Pierre is wearing a dark beige bathrobe and Hélène changes into an oversized light blue striped blouse with a bootcut dark denim. Slowly their romance goes through ups and downs while they head out to one of their extravagant dinners. Hélène’s pastel colored outfits are boldly feminine. She mostly wears minimalistic straight cut dresses and accessorises with beautiful ’70s oval shaped sunglasses. These costume choices showcase Hélène as an everyday example of natural elegance.

How to steal some of that French style? The trick to stealing some of that French style is to balance the polished and the messy aspects of your outfit. As if you woke up and had an impulsive idea that worked out in your favor. The polished and perfectly tailored details of your outfit will speak volumes about the item choices you make. Remember that a little goes a long way and try to find the balance that works for you. Are you an organized person? Then leave the messy ponytail for what it is and slick that hair back into a sleek hairstyle. If you’re just starting out and find it difficult to achieve the right balance, start with adding just one messy and natural looking detail to your outfit. Try to worry less about mixing and matching the rest of what you’re wearing.

Keep it simple. My favorite look is Hélène’s oversized blouse. White, light blue or even a black blouse can add an air of nonchalance to any outfit. Hélène wears her blouse a bit open with the sleeves rolled up. Her shirt is tucked into her high waisted dark Levi’s jeans. A bootcut dark denim works well if you have an hourglass figure. It will allow you to accentuate your small waist and cover areas around the hips you might not be as happy with. Don’t forget to scan the men’s department if you’re looking for an oversized blouse. The boxy cuts of these men’s shirts will give you that instant natural chic. The men’s department also tends to have more options when it comes to the wide range of material finishes. I picked the Selected Homme slim fit striped shirt in light blue, which allows me to combine the blouse with white jeans for the summer or a navy skirt for the office.
