Style Picks: Pack For Your Next Holiday With Style Notes From ‘To Catch a Thief’

Favorites, favorites… We all got them! It is difficult to pick a favorite movie or fashion era because there are so many little details that can make it your all-time favorite. When it comes to my wardrobe I tend to hold on to that pink dress in the back of my closet, which most people would probably find ”So out of fashion right now”. However, that might not be such a horrible thing because fashion trends have their way of coming back around. Unless I need to start going through the mess as soon as possible to pack my suitcase for that quick holiday getaway. – Costume Design by Edith Head

To Catch a Thief by Alfred Hitchcock sets the scene for the greatest European getaway in the French Riviera. The costume design is a picture perfect escape: Flowing chiffon gowns, big beach hats and bold cat-eye sunglasses. It will make you start rearranging every outfit you ever made for any of your summer holidays. C’mon, we all know you can do better than that?!

Let’s talk costume design, shall we? In the French Riviera a suspected thief tries to escape from the police. He gets quite far, but decides to take a break from being on the run when he bumps into the beautiful Frances Stevens (Grace Kelly). Whether she is a distraction or a target is yet to be determined. The beach vibe set in the glamorous environment of fine jewellery and bright diamonds gives the costume design the opportunity to play with timeless elegance. Imagine casual-wear like French stripes, suede loafers and espadrilles for the beach. When the starry night lights up the sky the outfits change to tuxedo suits with bow ties and golden chiffon nightgowns

Always start with your shape. Finding the right summer outfit can be difficult. The sun gets brighter and the days get longer. As if someone put a magnifying glass on your wardrobe. Certain colors can seem brighter when you wear them during the day, cheap materials can have an ugly shine and not everything seems to let your skin breathe properly. It can all be a bit too much to take into account when you’re packing up your suitcase. When choosing what to pack for your next holiday try to leave all of these details behind and start with assessing your body shape. Do you have an hourglass, rectangle, rounded, triangle or inverted triangle body shape? Even if you are going for an oversized look, try to start with accentuating your best features and deciding on what color palette will be an easy mix and match during your holiday.

Do take a look back. As for most of the 1950s, the Dior New Look kept influencing the ideal female shape in fashion. Women were going for unpadded round shoulders, shaped bust lines, defined waists and full billowy skirts in ankle length. For everyday casual-wear you would find the ladies of the 1950s picking an ankle length dress with puff sleeves and sometimes even wearing these dresses with a blouse underneath. Blouses could be sleeveless and were sometimes even worn with capri pants. By the late 1950s the long slick look had returned and long dresses were usually worn with short jackets.

My Daily Looks

Go with the flow. When packing for your next beach getaway, keep in mind to pack light. I do not mean to keep the suitcase light. To each their own when it comes to that fiasco! Try to think of breathable and natural materials like satin and linnen. When temperatures rise you want to keep your style easy, but that doesn’t mean you can’t heavily accessorise with anything from bold bright earrings to big bangle bracelets. Every summer holiday destination will give you a different chance to explore. It is up to you if you want to blend in or stand out!

Pack the essentials. The days might be hot and long, but the nights can always get a bit chilly. Remember to always pack a silk scarf. A pastel colored scarf will match most of your summer wardrobe and you can even wear it as a cool head piece. A pleated dress or skirt below the knee will give you that instant 1950s vibe, but make sure to add a modern twist to your look with what you choose to wear on top. An ankle length skirt in combination with a blouse can easily make you look frumpy and older than you actually are. Try to go for a sleeveless top in the same color or a playful pattern. Top it all off with your favorite summer fragrance and you’re good to go…
